Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, participated in the IAU–EAIE Internationalisation Leadership Dialogue, held at The Sir Jim McDonald Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom, on 8 September 2026. The President’s participation came following a high-level invitation from the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE), as part of efforts to strengthen international academic cooperation and facilitate the exchange of expertise and strategic perspectives among leaders of higher education institutions from around the world. The dialogue addressed a range of strategic issues related to the internationalisation of higher education amid current global challenges and transformations. It also explored international experiences and practices in developing academic and research partnerships and enhancing the international presence of universities. The event commenced with welcoming remarks from the University of Strathclyde, followed by addresses delivered by Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and Mr. Mervin Bakker, Executive Director of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). The event also featured a keynote lecture entitled “Leading Internationalisation in Turbulent Times,” delivered by Sir Anton Muscatelli, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The lecture addressed a number of strategic themes related to leading higher education institutions in environments characterised by rapid change and uncertainty. The keynote explored the VUCA Prime leadership model for managing institutions in volatile and uncertain circumstances, focusing on four key dimensions: Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. It also presented successful models and experiences in building equitable and sustainable university partnerships. The dialogue sessions further examined internationalisation markets, including the latest data and statistics on global trends in international student mobility and recruitment, as well as the transformations currently shaping international higher education. Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi participated in a number of dialogue sessions and roundtable discussions focusing on the future of international partnerships, mechanisms for selecting strategic partners, the development of joint academic programmes, the enhancement of research collaboration, and the consolidation of the principle of reciprocity in international academic relations. The sessions also explored ways of reconceptualising internationalisation, particularly through integrating internationalisation into curricula, leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning and academic mobility, and expanding the role of virtual exchange as a modern and sustainable approach to strengthening international academic cooperation and engagement. On the sidelines of the event, the President of Al-Mustaqbal University held a meeting with Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), during which they discussed prospects for future academic and research cooperation and partnerships. The meeting also included the presentation of a commemorative gift reflecting Iraq’s rich heritage and civilisation, highlighting the presence of Iraqi cultural identity at international academic forums. The participation also included a number of bilateral meetings with presidents and leaders of participating academic institutions, providing opportunities to exchange perspectives and expertise and explore potential avenues for joint academic and research collaboration.
