Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, participated in the IAU-EAIE Internationalisation Leadership Dialogue, held on 8 September 2026 at The Sir Jim McDonald Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom, with the participation of presidents and senior leaders of higher education institutions from around the world. The President’s participation came at the invitation of the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE), as part of efforts to strengthen international academic cooperation and exchange strategic expertise and perspectives on the future of higher education internationalisation amid rapidly evolving global challenges. The dialogue opened with welcoming remarks from the host university, followed by addresses from Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and Mr. Mervin Bakker, Executive Director of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). The event featured a keynote presentation entitled “Leading Internationalisation in Turbulent Times”, delivered by Sir Anton Muscatelli, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The presentation addressed a range of strategic themes related to leadership in higher education institutions and managing global challenges. The keynote explored the VUCA Prime leadership model, which focuses on Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility as essential principles for enabling higher education institutions to navigate complex and rapidly changing environments. The dialogue also examined successful models and strategies for building equitable and sustainable partnerships between universities, in addition to analysing internationalisation markets and reviewing recent data and statistics on global trends in international student mobility and recruitment. Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi also participated in a number of dialogue sessions and roundtable discussions addressing the future of international partnerships, mechanisms for selecting academic partners, the development of joint academic programmes, research collaboration, and strengthening the principle of reciprocity in relationships between higher education institutions. The sessions further explored ways of reimagining internationalisation in higher education and integrating it into curricula, as well as the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing learning and academic mobility, alongside the importance of virtual exchange as a modern and sustainable approach to strengthening communication and collaboration among universities worldwide. The President’s participation also included a number of bilateral meetings, including a meeting with Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), during which she was presented with a commemorative gift reflecting aspects of Iraq’s rich heritage and civilisation. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss prospects for future academic and research partnerships. In addition, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi held meetings with leaders of participating academic institutions. This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to expanding its presence in international academic forums and developing its strategic plans in line with global developments in higher education management. It also contributes to expanding the University’s international partnerships and networks, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). As the first-ranked among private universities in Iraq, Al-Mustaqbal University continues to strengthen its active presence in international academic forums, contributing to the development of sustainable educational and research partnerships and advancing its strategic focus on internationalisation, innovation, and quality in higher education.
