Professor Dr. Fadhil Jawad Al-Tu’mah, a faculty member in the Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies, Al-Mustaqbal University, and a Senior Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the College of Medicine, University of Karbala, participated as a member of the Master’s thesis defense committee for the postgraduate student Rusal Wathiq Abdul-Muein. The thesis, entitled “Assessment of Oxidative Stress and Selected Biochemical Parameters in Patients with Celiac Disease in Ramadi City,” was submitted to the Deanship of the College of Science at the University of Anbar in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master’s degree. The defense was held on the morning of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in the Jaber ibn Hayyan Hall at the College of Science, University of Anbar. The session was attended in part by the President of the University of Anbar, Professor Dr. Mushtaq Talib Salih Al-Nada, along with his assistants and the Dean of the College of Science. The study aimed to assess serum biomarkers, including antibodies, oxidative stress markers, and selected hematological and immunological parameters, among Iraqi patients with Celiac Disease. The findings demonstrated a marked elevation in tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG-IgA and tTG-IgG) among patients compared with the healthy control group. Oxidative stress markers showed a non-classical compensatory response, characterized by decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The study also confirmed iron-deficiency anemia as the most consistent systemic complication, whereas no statistically significant differences were observed in vitamin D3 and interleukin-15 (IL-15) levels. When these biomarkers were integrated into a multivariable logistic regression model, the diagnostic performance increased substantially, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.967. The model demonstrated excellent discriminatory performance between the two groups, with a sensitivity of 88.9% and a high specificity of 95.6%. The study concluded that Iraqi patients with Celiac Disease exhibit a distinctive biomarker profile and recommended the need for local revalidation of externally established diagnostic criteria. On the sidelines of the defense, Professor Dr. Fadhil Jawad Al-Tu’mah presented a scholarly reference book co-authored with Professor Dr. Zeina Abdul-Munim Al-Jawadi from the College of Science, University of Mosul, entitled “Medical Aspects of Lipid Metabolism.” The book was presented as a gift to the President of the University of Anbar, Professor Dr. Mushtaq Talib Al-Nada, to serve as a reference in the Central Library for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and biological sciences. Following an extensive discussion between the examination committee members and the student regarding the thesis topic and her defense of the research findings, along with the publication of a scientific research paper in a reputable journal, the thesis was approved with a Very Good grade.
