Abstract Edge Computing is an emerging technology designed to process data closer to the location where it is generated rather than sending all data to centralized cloud data centers. The technology has gained importance due to the growing demand for rapid data processing, low latency, and efficient network utilization. Edge Computing is particularly important with the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and smart systems. This article discusses the concept and operation of Edge Computing, its major advantages, modern applications, challenges, and future prospects. Keywords: Edge Computing, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Data Processing, Cybersecurity. 1. Introduction In recent years, the volume of data generated by smartphones, sensors, cameras, and connected devices has increased significantly. This growth has created a need for technologies capable of processing data rapidly and efficiently. Edge Computing provides an effective approach by moving part of the data processing closer to users and data sources instead of relying entirely on remote cloud data centers. 2. Concept of Edge Computing Edge Computing is a computing model that enables data processing, storage, and analysis to take place close to the location where data is generated. Instead of transmitting all data to the cloud, a significant portion can be processed locally on edge devices or nearby servers. This approach reduces latency and improves network efficiency. 3. How Edge Computing Works Edge Computing distributes processing tasks among edge devices, network infrastructure, and cloud platforms. When Internet of Things devices generate large amounts of data, important information can be processed locally, while data requiring more advanced analysis can be transmitted to cloud servers. This architecture enables faster decision-making and reduces the amount of data transferred through communication networks. 4. Major Advantages The major advantages of Edge Computing include reduced latency, faster data processing, lower bandwidth consumption, and improved service continuity when connectivity to the cloud is limited. Local processing can also contribute to improved privacy by reducing the need to transmit certain sensitive data to remote data centers. 5. Modern Applications Edge Computing is increasingly used in several modern fields, including smart cities, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, smart manufacturing, security and surveillance systems, cloud gaming, and fifth-generation (5G) networks. In healthcare, edge devices can process data from medical monitoring systems rapidly, helping identify conditions that may require immediate attention. In smart and autonomous vehicles, Edge Computing allows data from cameras and sensors to be processed close to the vehicle, supporting rapid decision-making during operation. In smart manufacturing, edge systems can analyze sensor data, monitor equipment, and identify potential failures before they occur. 6. Edge Computing and Artificial Intelligence The integration of artificial intelligence with Edge Computing has become an important technological direction known as Edge AI. This approach enables AI models to operate close to the data source, such as cameras and smart devices, without sending all data to the cloud. As a result, systems can achieve faster responses while reducing network traffic. 7. Challenges Despite its advantages, Edge Computing faces several challenges, including securing a large number of distributed devices, managing limited computing resources, maintaining software, protecting data, and coordinating edge devices with centralized cloud infrastructure. 8. Future Prospects The importance of Edge Computing is expected to continue growing with the expansion of 5G networks, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. Advances in low-power processors and embedded systems are also expected to increase the computational capabilities of edge devices and enable them to perform more complex analytical tasks. 9. Conclusion Edge Computing represents an important transformation in data processing by moving part of computing operations from centralized data centers to locations closer to the data source. It provides significant benefits in terms of speed, latency reduction, and network efficiency, making it suitable for many modern applications. As artificial intelligence, IoT, and advanced communication networks continue to evolve, Edge Computing is expected to become an essential component of future digital and intelligent systems.
