Al-Mustaqbal University marked a distinguished international academic presence through its official delegation’s participation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, a campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from 24–26 August 2026. The workshop brought together university presidents, academics, experts, and specialists in sustainability from universities and international institutions.
Representing Al-Mustaqbal University at this international academic forum were Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shaker Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University. Their participation reflects the University’s commitment to strengthening its presence in global academic forums and engaging with leading international experiences in building sustainable universities and advancing institutional practices in this field.
The workshop served as an international platform for exchanging perspectives and expertise on the future of sustainability in higher education institutions, while addressing major global trends and practices in green infrastructure, energy, water and waste management, sustainable transportation, education and scientific research, as well as the development of university campuses in accordance with global sustainability standards.
Al-Mustaqbal University’s participation was particularly significant given that the workshop was held at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, widely recognized as one of the world’s leading models of university sustainability. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth globally, while maintaining its position as Germany’s top-ranked university in the ranking since 2017. This has established Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld as an internationally recognized model for implementing the principles of a green and sustainable campus.
On the sidelines of the workshop, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, where they discussed prospects for strengthening communication and cooperation, exchanging expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions, and highlighting Al-Mustaqbal University’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable university campus.
As part of its efforts to strengthen international academic relations and foster cooperation, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation presented the University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to support universities worldwide, promote the adoption of sustainable practices, and encourage continuous improvement in sustainability performance.
The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in recognition of the University’s distinguished role in advancing sustainability and developing an innovative academic model in this field.
The visit also included a commemorative recognition presented to Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and his role in supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability.
This participation is aligned with Al-Mustaqbal University’s vision of strengthening its international academic partnerships, keeping pace with global trends in sustainability, enhancing its performance across international university rankings, exchanging expertise with leading universities and institutions worldwide, and benefiting from best practices in developing a more efficient and sustainable university campus.
