Al-Mustaqbal University Participates in the 12th International UI GreenMetric Workshop for Sustainable Universities in Germany
Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24–26, 2026, with the participation of university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from international universities and institutions. The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation was represented by Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shaker Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University, as part of the university’s efforts to strengthen its international presence and exchange expertise and experiences in university sustainability, green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water, waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and scientific research. The hosting of the workshop by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld is particularly significant, as the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth worldwide in the 2025 UI GreenMetric ranking. It has also maintained its leading position among German universities in this ranking since 2017, making it one of the prominent international models for implementing university sustainability practices. During the participation, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, where they discussed ways to strengthen communication and cooperation and exchange expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions. The meeting also included an overview of Al-Mustaqbal University’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable university campus. During the meeting, the delegation presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to support and promote sustainability practices in universities internationally. The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, to which Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld belongs, in recognition of the university’s distinguished role in supporting sustainability and developing an advanced university model with a global standing in this field. The university delegation also presented an honorary recognition to Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability. This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to strengthening its international partnerships, improving its performance in global sustainability rankings, benefiting from leading international experiences, and highlighting its initiatives in sustainable development. It also aims to extend the university’s impact from the campus to the wider community, reinforcing its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building effective international academic partnerships.
