As part of its commitment to social responsibility and its leading role in promoting environmental protection and sustainable development, and under the guidance of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Hassan Shaker Majdi, Al-Mustaqbal University, represented by the Diwan Affairs Department and the Sustainable Development Division, participated in the national campaign to remove water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) from the Euphrates River. The campaign was held under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, with the participation of the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, the Governor of Babylon, as well as numerous governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteer teams. Eng. Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the University's Sustainable Development Division, emphasized that the University's participation, alongside its Sustainability Ambassadors, reflects its vision of transforming knowledge into practical initiatives that serve society and protect the environment. He explained that the rapid spread of water hyacinth has become a growing environmental and water-resource challenge due to its obstruction of water flow in the Euphrates River and irrigation canals, its adverse impact on the efficiency of drinking water treatment facilities, and its excessive consumption of water resources, particularly in light of Iraq's increasing water scarcity and the impacts of climate change. He further noted that safeguarding water resources is a shared national responsibility requiring close cooperation among government institutions, universities, civil society organizations, and citizens. He affirmed that Al-Mustaqbal University places environmental awareness and the promotion of volunteerism among its highest priorities, driven by its commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building a more environmentally conscious and resilient society. The campaign also witnessed the active participation of the University's students and Sustainability Ambassadors, who contributed to the removal of water hyacinth while carrying out awareness activities aimed at highlighting the importance of protecting rivers and preserving water resources. Their engagement reflected a strong sense of national responsibility and community service among the University's youth. Al-Mustaqbal University continues to implement environmental and community initiatives in line with its vision that a modern university is not only a center for education and scientific research but also an active partner in achieving sustainable development, a supporter of national initiatives, and a platform for preparing future generations capable of protecting both people and the environment while contributing to a more sustainable future.
