In line with the directives of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdy, and in accordance with the University’s mission to serve the community and promote the principles of sustainable development, Al-Mustaqbal University, represented by the Department of Administrative Affairs and the Sustainable Development Division, participated in the national campaign to clean the Euphrates River of the invasive Water Hyacinth plant.
The campaign was launched under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, with the participation of the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, and the Governor of Babylon, alongside several government institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteers.
Engineer Khalid Kadhim Al-Salhi, Director of the University’s Sustainable Development Division, stated that the participation of the University’s Sustainability Ambassadors in this national campaign reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to transforming knowledge into meaningful community action. He explained that Water Hyacinth has become a serious environmental and water-related challenge, as it obstructs the flow of water in the Euphrates River and irrigation canals, reduces the efficiency of drinking water treatment plants, and consumes large quantities of water at a time when Iraq is facing increasing water scarcity due to climate change.
He further emphasized that protecting water resources is no longer solely the responsibility of government institutions but has become a shared national duty requiring the collective efforts of universities, public institutions, civil society organizations, and citizens. He added that the University believes environmental awareness and volunteer work are fundamental pillars for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building a society capable of addressing environmental challenges.
The campaign witnessed the active participation of the University’s students and Sustainability Ambassadors, who contributed to removing Water Hyacinth from the river while also delivering awareness messages highlighting the importance of protecting rivers and conserving water resources. Their participation reflected the strong sense of national belonging and social responsibility among the University’s youth.
Al-Mustaqbal University continues to implement environmental and community initiatives based on its vision that a modern university is not only an institution for education and scientific research, but also a genuine partner in sustainable development, a hub for national initiatives, and a platform for preparing future leaders capable of protecting both people and the environment.
