Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Education, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Roudhan Salman, and under the supervision of the Head of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, Professor Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah, the College of Education organized an awareness workshop on the occasion of World Environment Day. The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Ahmed Jundi and Professor Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah. They highlighted that World Environment Day (WED) 2026 is a major annual event dedicated to protecting our planet. Celebrated by millions of people around the world on June 5 each year, it is considered the largest global platform for raising awareness about environmental issues. They also reviewed the historical background of this day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 15, 1972, with the aim of increasing environmental awareness and encouraging both political and public action to protect the environment. The first celebration took place in 1973. The 2026 celebration carries the central theme “Climate Action”, with Azerbaijan serving as the host country. The theme emphasizes that the Earth is sending us warning signals through wildfires, floods, and other environmental challenges, prompting us to ask: What signal will we send in response? The presenters also referred to the 2025 celebration, hosted by South Korea, which focused on “Ending Plastic Pollution” under the slogan #BeatPlasticPollution. Reports indicated that approximately 11 million tons of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems every year, causing social and environmental costs estimated between 300 and 600 billion US dollars. The workshop highlighted the importance and activities of World Environment Day, which brings together governments, businesses, individuals, and public figures through initiatives such as clean-up campaigns, tree-planting activities, awareness workshops, and artistic events. These efforts support the transition toward a circular economy, clean energy, and sustainable practices in everyday life. The participants emphasized that everyone can contribute to this global occasion through: • Individually: Reducing plastic use, conserving energy and water, and supporting local products. • Community Engagement: Participating in local events or volunteering in tree-planting and environmental clean-up campaigns. • Digitally: Following official environmental campaigns and using digital platforms to spread awareness. #College_of_Education #Al_Mustaqbal_University
