Al-Mustaqbal University Celebrates Earth Day with Awareness Activities and Sustainable Initiatives

Al-Mustaqbal University in Iraq celebrated Earth Day, observed on April 22, 2025, by launching a series of awareness activities and environmental initiatives as part of the Third International Al-Mustaqbal Festival for Sustainability, held from April 16 to 24, 2025. This reflects the university's strong commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting environmental responsibility. The central event witnessed a distinguished presence of professors, students, and staff. Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of the University, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the major environmental challenges facing Iraq and the world, and emphasizing the critical role of universities in addressing them. The celebration featured a documentary film showcasing the university’s environmental achievements, along with specialized exhibitions, including: Promoting hydroponic farming to conserve natural resources. Raising awareness about the dangers of plastic waste. Encouraging sustainable farming practices such as organic mushroom cultivation. Organizing field visits to greenhouses and natural food production sites managed by students. Awareness sessions addressed the impact of pollution on public health and wildlife, while new agricultural reserves were inaugurated by the University President, promoting the "productive university" concept and expanding green spaces. In an effort to involve younger generations, schoolchildren participated in planting diverse seedlings, supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). In his remarks, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi affirmed Al-Mustaqbal University's continuous commitment to community-driven and eco-friendly initiatives, noting that such activities represent a successful model for broader application.
